I play a lot of games. In fact, in 2025 alone, I rolled credits on over two dozen games. It could have been more, but putting over 100 hours into games like Arc Raiders affected that! My tastes and interests in gaming are quite varied, and the games I finished range from ‘90s classics to the latest and greatest new releases.

The final tally comes out to 29 for me in 2025, but it’s actually more than that. There are about a half dozen or so more that I can’t mention due to NDAs for games I consulted on or did mock reviews for—some of which aren’t even out yet!

Instead of trying to rank them or list them in any sort of meaningful order, I’m just listing them in the order I beat them. Sort of. The last third might be mixed up a little bit.

I’d really like to publish on my Substack more in 2026. What sort of content would you be interested in seeing? Recaps and links to my professionally published, paid writing on sites like Forbes, GamesBeat, etc? More blogging? Retro collecting? Something else?

Anyway, here is my gaming recap for 2025!

The Lion King

(Sega Genesis, November 1994)

This game has quite an infamous reputation. It’s regarded as one of the hardest games ever made, and having grown up with the game, I can certainly say it earned that reputation. The developers famously admitted that they made it so hard because they wanted people to have to rent it more than once in order to actually beat it.

At the start of the year, I livestreamed myself beating it entirely from start to finish on original hardware without any cheats, save states, or emulating. That was a big moment for me, and this game remains one of my absolute favorites of all time. I wrote a review here and made a video version up above.

Aladdin

(Sega Genesis, October 1993)

Did you know this game is the fourth best-selling Sega Genesis game of all time, with over 4 million copies sold? It outranks Sonic the Hedgehog 3 + Sonic & Knuckles, Jurassic Park, NBA Jam, and more. That’s wild, but well-deserved.

Some people prefer the SNES version, but they’re wrong. The Genesis version features artwork contributed by actual Disney animators, a better soundtrack, more gameplay variety since Aladdin has a sword, and better levels overall. I appreciate the platforming precision of the SNES game, but Aladdin on Genesis is just better. Fight me.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth

(PlayStation 5, February 2024)

I feel like a crazy person for admitting this, but I’ve never loved Final Fantasy VII like most RPG fans. I vastly prefer FF4 and FF10, and also think FF6 is a better game. That being said, Sephiroth, Tifa, and Aerith are fantastic characters, and I’ve grown to appreciate Cloud’s tragic past more as time goes on.

In that regard, the Remake series has felt very targeted towards me. I never really vibed well with the original’s art style or steampunk aesthetic, but ramping things up with a more modern look, incredible voice acting, and even better music has been wonderful. Tifa is still best girl, and this entry did, in fact, make me cry, even though the middle third is incredibly bloated and full of content padding.

Ys 1 Chronicles

(Steam Deck / PC, 1989/2013)

I’ve never actually finished an Ys game, so this was an entirely new experience for me. I’d dabbled in a few over the years, but never took the time to actually finish one. I’m glad I finally did, and I want to play more of the series this year.

What always put me off about the Ys games is the “bump” combat in that you literally just collide with enemies to attack them—there is no attack button like in old Zelda games. It feels weird, and I never really got used to it, but the music and artwork are exquisite in the remake version of the game. Plays great on Steam Deck as well, and it’s very short.

Aerowings

(Sega Dreamcast, September 1999)

Near the start of the year, I made this post and video about wanting to collect, play, and review every single Sega Dreamcast game released in North America. I do still want to do this, but I didn’t really keep up with the playing and reviewing part in 2025. I kept collecting, though! I’ve now got well over 100 Dreamcast games in my collection and am nearly halfway to a full NA set.

I’m playing and reviewing them in release order, so the first game out of the launch lineup was Aerowings. It’s fine. I don’t like flight sim type games, and this one doesn’t even have any combat, but it’s still a neat relic and an impressive game for its era. Written review here, video review here.

Justice League Task Force

(Sega Genesis, June 1995)

I’ve never been particularly good at fighting games, but I do enjoy a nice punch and kick from time to time. Mortal Kombat, Soul Calibur, and Super Smash Bros. are the only fighting series that I’ve ever had any particular adoration for or skill at, so obscure fighting games like this one have a steep learning curve for me.

The premise here is pretty simple: the members of the Justice League are under mind control, so you have to fight them all and save the world. Each hero feels relatively distinct, with some nice, big character sprites and great stage designs. It’s a decent game! Written review here, video review here.

Airforce Delta

(Sega Dreamcast, September 1999)

I was on a bit of a roll here, clearly, knocking out my second Dreamcast game of the year, complete with a written and video review. Surely that means I’ll get through a big chunk of the library in 2025…right?

That didn’t happen. However, I can say that at least I enjoyed this game more than Aerowings. This game is much more like Ace Combat with lots of aerial dogfights and mission variety. Visually, it’s muddier and doesn’t look as sharp, even after using an upscaler, but it’s got a very Top Gun feel that absolutely works for me. Written review here, video review here.

Captain America and the Avengers

(Sega Genesis, December 1992)

I absolutely love a good, short, fun retro beat ‘em up. Games like Streets of Rage 2, Golden Axe, Knights of the Round, and D&D Shadow Over Mystara are some of my favorite games, so this was right up my alley.

Share Jagger Byte

It’s a bit of a quirky little relic of the past, considering this game was released decades before the MCU existed or the Avengers were as big as they are now. Choosing Hawkeye and Vision over characters like Thor and The Hulk feels silly now, but it’s still a good time. Video review here; I never did a written version.

Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete Remaster

(PS5, April 2025, Originally on PS1 in May 1999)

Fitting that the first game I finished last year, which was actually released in 2025, is actually just a remaster of a decades-old JRPG. I remember playing this game back in the day, and I’d always wanted to finally finish it and thankfully it was absolutely worth the wait.

This game pioneered so many things for its era, including anime-style FMV sequences and cutscenes, voice acting, and an incredible art style that absolutely stands the test of time. It’s a beautiful game and I standby calling it a must-play for any JRPG fan now that it’s fully accessible on modern platforms. Written review for Forbes here, video review here.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

(PS5, April 2025)

My streak of making review videos for games I beat had to finally come to an end, so it’s ironic that it happened with the best game I played all year. Words can’t really express just how impactful this game was for me. It deserves every award. The amazing story focused on grief, it’s multi-layered worldbuilding, incredible characters, superb soundtrack, and deep, tactical turn-based combat were all huge factors.

That being said, I don’t think this is a game I can recommend universally without caveats. Even though the turn-based combat is far more active and skill-based than most turn-based RPGs, it’s still very much a turn-based game, and that will be off-putting to some. But if you’re into that kind of thing, I can’t recommend Clair Obscure enough. This may be in my top 10 games of all time, and it was easily my favorite of 2025. I talked about it in this Short a little bit.

Mario Kart World

(Switch 2, June 2025)

I don’t regret getting a Switch 2, but the actual Switch 2 library wasn’t the main draw for me. I’ve mostly enjoyed playing my existing Switch games I never got around to much from the poor performance and visuals. In that regard, the Switch 2 has been fantastic. That being said, I think Mario Kart World was a good launch game.

I’ve never been the biggest Mario Kart (or racing game, in general) fan, but there’s a ton of content packed into this game. I love the new take on courses with huge player counts and the Knockout Tour mode is tons of fun online with friends. Overall, I’d say it’s a very good game and probably the second-best Mario Kart behind Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, but it’s not even my favorite arcade racer from 2025. That one’s coming up soon, though, in this list. I did a quick video review here.

Ninja Gaiden Ragebound

(PC / Steam Deck, July 2025)

The sidescrolling 2D Ninja Gaiden games are severely underrated, extremely challenging, and insanely fun. They don’t get the credit they deserve, and that original trilogy of NES games totally holds up to this day. You can imagine my excitement, then, when I heard about Ninja Gaiden Ragebound.

Instead of only focusing on the modern 3D action series, Tecmo was actually returning the franchise to its roots for the first time in what felt like a billion years. The end result is an exquisite pixel art action platformer that’s better than I could have imagined. Written review for Forbes here, video review here.

Gradius Origins

(PS5, August 2025)

Despite how much I love a good scrolling shoot ‘em up, I’ve never been amazing at them. The bullet hell genre feels really overwhelming to me, but the intensity is also what makes me love them.

Gradius is one of the original games that helped put the genre on the map, so getting to experience iconic releases from that series in one big collection was a real treat. Written review here, and producer interview here.

Shantae Advance: Risky Revolution

(Switch 2, August 2025)

This is a unique game in that it shouldn’t really exist. It was canceled back in the day when it was basically finished because WayForward couldn’t secure a publisher, but now it’s been completed. You can even get it on a GBA cartridge, but I just played it on Switch 2.

Shantae is one of those game characters that has a very vocal and adoring fanbase, but for whatever reason, she just isn’t as popular as you’d think she should be. All of her games are at least very solid, the pixel art is excellent, and the music is always top-notch. Written review here, and I did a Short quick video review here.

Shinobi Art of Vengeance

(PS5, August 2025)

Just like Ninja Gaiden got a 2D revival this year, so did Shinobi. Growing up, I loved playing Shadow Dancer and Shinobi 3 on Sega Genesis, so returning to this world felt amazing. Visually, this game is absolutely gorgeous, and it looks like a moving painting at all times.

And just like Ragebound, I fear this game ended up getting overlooked and overshadowed by the sheer volume of amazing games we had releasing in 2025. Please check it out! Written review here and developer interview here.

Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds

(PS5, September 2025)

Remember how I said Mario Kart World was just, sort of, fine? Well, part of that reaction is because Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds came out shortly after and was far better (to me) in every conceivable way. I love Sega IP more; the crossovers are fantastic, and the amazing cross-world mechanic makes every race feel fresh and exciting.

I would enjoy seeing more Sega IP represented across the DLC and collab characters, as Racing Transformed did, but that’s a small gripe. Overall, this is the best Sonic racing game ever and one of my favorite racers as well. Written review here, video preview here, and above.

Silent Hill f

(PS5, September 2025)

As a (relative) newcomer to the franchise who only just played the original on PlayStation 1 and the new remake of SH2 on PlayStation 5 last year, I’m eager to dive into the rest of the series sometime soon to see what I’ve been missing out on. This game floored me and left me speechless with its story and visuals.

Silent Hill f is the first new entry in the series in over a decade. By leaning on the power of the brand, which has a new lease on life thanks to the Silent Hill 2 remake last year, Konami’s big bet on its staple horror franchise is paying off. That’s the power of a great revival. Written review here.

Pac-Man World 2 Re-Pac

(Switch 2, September 2025)

I love a good 3D platformer, but I really, really love a great 3D platformer, and that’s what Pac-Man World 2 Re-Pac is. The original has a good reputation, but lots of subtle enhancements, improvements, and new features really elevates the whole package here.

This one feels like it flew under the radar a bit in 2025, but if you like 3D platformers at all, whatsoever, you should really check this game out. Written review here.

Ninja Gaiden 4

(Xbox Series X, October 2025)

I think Ragebound is a better game than Ninja Gaiden 4, but it’s admittedly hard to compare them. One is a sidescrolling linear 2D action game, while this one is an epic-scale 3D action-adventure with explorable levels and fast-paced combo-driven combat.

That being said, if you like this type of game, then Ninja Gaiden 4 is a ton of fun. It’s super fast-paced, does a great job of layering on new mechanics as you play, and feels amazing. Super violent too, so hopefully you like seeing fountains of blood. Written review here.

Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection

(PS5, October 2025)

As I mentioned earlier, Mortal Kombat is one of the only fighting game franchises I’ve ever really clicked with, so this was a real treat for me. This collection does a wonderful job of bringing together virtually every single classic 2D version of Mortal Kombat into one single game, but it’s a lot more than that.

More importantly, similar to the Atari 50th game, Digital Eclipse went above and beyond here by including hours and hours of documentary footage, interviews, archived documents, and so much more that chronicles the creation and evolution of the series. It’s a must-buy for fans of game history alone. Written review here.

Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty

(PS5 and Switch 2, September 2023)

Cyberpunk 2077 is, without a doubt, one of my top 5 favorite games ever made. The world feels so authentic and immersive, and all of the characters are extremely memorable. I love the aesthetic, the storyline, and the gameplay feels amazing. Katana with lots of acrobatic-style upgrades, plus shotguns, was my preferred playstyle, but I’d love to eventually do a range hacker type too.

The expansion is, somehow, just as good as the base game (if not better), and I can’t recommend it highly enough. I was absolutely in love with all of the new characters and content. Just like the base game, it made me cry. No full review, but I did a quick summary about the Switch 2 edition here.

Battlefield 6

(PS5, October 2025)

People absolutely had their doubts about whether or not Battlefield 6 could stick the landing after the terrible launch of Battlefield 2042, but EA pulled it off. The campaign is fine—it could have been a lot better—but the multiplayer is where the game really shines.

The destructible buildings are amazing and add so much complexity and emergent gameplay to every match. I don’t typically stick with these kinds of games for very long, but I do intend on keeping it installed and checking in from time to time. Written review here.

Arc Raiders

(PS5, October 2025)

I’ve played and enjoyed lots of battle royale games, but I’d never really found an extraction shooter to vibe with. Something about the insanely competitive and sweaty playerbase was always off-putting to me, and they’re usually so unapproachable for newcomers, especially games like Escape from Tarkov.

Arc Raiders is special, though. They’ve nailed that perfect balance between incredible depth and complexity that reveals itself the deeper you go, but it’s far more accessible for a general gaming audience. I’ve got around 100 hours into this game so far, and most of those hours have come after I finished my review. That’s very, very rare for me. Written review here and tips guide here.

Neon Inferno

(Steam Deck / PC, November 2025)

Neon Inferno came out of nowhere and really surprised me. It feels like an amalgamation of games like Contra and Sunset Riders, mixed with a gorgeous cyberpunk pixel art aesthetic.

One of the coolest features is how you can shoot enemies both on the level with you, and also in the background behind you, which makes taking cover and using the environment very important. Written review here.

Dispatch

(Steam Deck / PC, November 2025)

I was absolutely obsessed with this game. I got the chance to play some episodes early to review them and even chat with the voice cast (I was so nervous interviewing Laura Bailey!!! Link at the end of the next paragraph) and it was just such a wonderful game.

It’s more like an interactive animated series with eight hour-long episodes and limited gameplay segments, but it works so well. I can’t stop thinking about it. Written review here and voice cast interviews here.

Marvel Cosmic Invasion

(Steam Deck / PC, December 2025)

This was one of my most anticipated games of 2025, and it totally delivered. The roster is full of so much variety, and all of the stages look amazing. I love this style of pixel art and I really would love to see Sonic, Nintendo, and Dragon Ball games in this same exact style.

It’s even more fun in co-op, despite the crazy action happening that can make it tough to discern who is who. Honestly, this is probably one of the best retro beat ‘em up games ever made. Written review here.

Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition

(Switch 2, May 2020)

It took me years to finally beat this game, and it was, mostly, worth the slog. There is a lot of bloat here that I didn’t love, and the final story beats were so incredibly cliche and cringey that it made it tough to push through for me, but I loved the characters and combat enough to keep going.

I own the rest of the series already (Xenoblade 2, 3, and X), so when I get the urge to play a Xenoblade again, I’ve got options. I liked the game a lot, but I don’t love it as much as a lot of folks.

Rayman GBC Re-Release

(Game Boy Color / Chromatic, 2025, Originally 2000)

I remember playing and loving this game as a kid, so it was a real treat to re-experience it on the ModRetro Chromatic with this re-release. It’s a great platformer with some insane difficulty spikes, but is so much fun.

This re-release is basically the same game at a higher price, which is weird, but it does have much better music and audio. Worth it if you’re after the best version of this game! The GBC version is basically a truncated and abbreviated version of the Jaguar / Saturn / PS1 original.

ZPF

(Sega Genesis, November 2025)

We’ve reached the end. I started it off with a Sega Genesis game, and then I ended it with a Sega Genesis game. Pretty fitting!

This is a really cool, brand-new Sega Genesis game that was released in 2025, and it features some of the best pixel art and music on the platform. They ran a Kickstarter to fund this game, and it’s finally out physically with a digital version on Steam coming soon this year. Written review here.

There you go, it was a pretty crazy year for me.

One of my main gaming goals for 2026 is to finish at least one game for each and every platform I own. When you add in new games, I’ll be aiming to play even more games than I did in 2025. Time will tell if I can accomplish that!

Over the last several weeks, since my last post in mid-July, it’s been a busy time. I’ve gotten into the swing of contributing to Forbes a lot more often (you can follow my author page here) and had a slew of game demo appointments around San Francisco last month. Fortunately, all four of the games I tried were fantastic.

I’m still slowly working on my Sega Dreamcast collection and will have a big update on some new pickups for that very soon.

Resident Evil Requiem

Capcom invited a bunch of members of the games press to their office in San Francisco, CA, and let us check out three of their upcoming games for 2026. Out of the three, the one I was the most excited to check out was definitely Resident Evil Requiem. I’ve played almost every game in the series, and it’s a franchise I’ve loved for literally decades at this point.

I really loved RE7 a lot, especially playing it in VR back on PSVR, but for me, RE8 didn’t strike the same sense of fear that I found in 7. I also found the mixture of locales and juxtaposition of its different enemies and themes a bit jarring. I prefer the more focused pacing of games like RE2 Remake, 7, and the original, as well as RE0.

Pragmata

This is another one of the Capcom previews; however, this one is a brand-new IP that isn’t based on a longrunning series. In fact, they originally revealed this game several years ago before it went quiet for some time. A lot of people speculated that it was canceled, but alas, it’s back and looks better than ever.

I’ve always really loved this sort of sci-fi aesthetic that’s really bright and full of life. It seems like a lot of sci-fi over recent years has taken a darker and more horror-adjacent approach in games, but Pragmata is back to a more vibrant and active vibe that has a really cool, almost retro-futuristic aesthetic.

The most interesting part of Pragmata is the way combat is structured. When you’re fighting the robots and machines, the little girl on your back is actually an android that can hack the machines. While you’re blasting away with your different guns, you’ll use the face buttons to navigate little puzzles at the same time to perform the “hack” itself. It’s really active and intense.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword

I don’t know much about the Onimusha series because, for whatever reason, I just never played it growing up. However, I did recently try out the Onimusha 2 remaster and enjoyed it for what it was.

This new game has a more modern gameplay system, a modern camera angle, and much faster-paced combat. There was some speculation that it would be a sort of Souls-like take on Onimusha, but it doesn’t seem like that at all from what I saw. Instead, it’s a more linear action game with a dark, gritty, and gory aesthetic.

Sonic Racing CrossWorlds

You might have had the chance to try out the Open Network test for yourself and that’s similar to the content I got to try out at this preview event. Sega rented a conference room at a hotel in San Francisco, CA, and invited the press out for demos. What I played at the event was solo only, but I got to try a bunch of different courses and characters, including Hatsune Miku herself.

From what I’ve seen, I really am hyped for this game. I think I liked what I saw more than Mario Kart World, and it’s quickly shot up my list of most-anticipated games for the rest of this year.

Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter

The Trails series is one that I’ve heard a lot about over the years from lots of different people, but I just haven’t ever played any of them. I tried the first game back on PSP years ago and got around 10 hours into it, but fell off at the time.

Now, with this remake, the excitement bug for a big new JRPG has bitten me once again, and there’s a massive free demo out for anyone to try. The demo is fantastic and includes the entire prologue, which covers 5-7+ hours of content. And all of the progress carries over!

I didn’t make a video about this one (yet), but I wrote up some thoughts on why I loved the combat so much.

Shinobi: Art of Vengeance

I grew up as a huge Sega fan. I played tons of Shinobi games on the Sega Genesis as a kid and always loved the likes of Sonic, Streets of Rage, Golden Axe, Phantasy Star, and more growing up. Obviously, I was extremely excited to learn that Lizardcube would be the developers of the new 2D Shinobi game, the same folks who worked on Streets of Rage 4.

The end result is really fantastic, and even though gameplay is a huge evolution and departure from the originals, I think it feels like a really natural iteration. I reviewed the game for Forbes and interviewed the creators as well about its inspirations.

Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound

One of my biggest complaints with modern 2D games, especially indie games, is that so many of them are roguelikes or metroidvanias. What happened to the good ol’ action platformer with linear levels? That’s my jam.

And that’s exactly what the new Ninja Gaiden is, just like the games that inspired it. Whereas Shinobi is a modern reinterpretation of a classic series, this feels like a super-charged SNES or GBA-style sequel to the original NES trilogy, and it’s just about perfect.

Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty

Cyberpunk 2077 is one of my favorite games of all time. I love the world, the characters, the build variety, the combat, the storylines, and everything in between. It’s not a perfect game, and it took literally years of updates to get to the point where it’s at, but I can’t recommend it highly enough.

It took me a while to get around to it, but the Phantom Liberty expansion is phenomenal. They took everything that worked best in the base game, condensed it down into a tighter and more well-paced story, and just went crazy.

Definitely check it out! And it runs well on Switch 2 if that’s your preference, although I personally played it mostly on PS5 Pro.

Donkey Kong Bananza

I saved my spiciest take for last. I don’t love Donkey Kong Bananza.

Don’t get me wrong; I don’t dislike the game, but it just isn’t grabbing me or holding my attention at all. The gameplay and exploration feel extremely one-note and repetitive to me in a way that grows old very quickly. I think I’m around the halfway point, nearly done with the Forest Layer, and it’s really a struggle to get myself motivated to play it.

I’m a DK fan and loved the Donkey Kong Country games as well as Donkey Kong 64, and I just don’t think Bananza is a game made for me. And that’s okay.

I’ll keep trying a bit more, but I’m not sure I’ll bother finishing it.

Well, that’s a lot. There is more, too, like Gradius Origins and Shantae Advance, but I digress.

It’s been a while since I posted anything here. Whoops. I wanted to try to be consistent, but I just haven’t really kept up with it. Life happens!

As you can assume, my Dreamcast Review Project hasn’t made much progress lately, but I have continued collecting Dreamcast games and retro games generally. I’m up to nearly 800 games in my physical collection, nearly 100 of which are for the Sega Dreamcast.

I ran into some issues with finding time to record footage of games for review, since I want to play and capture all my own footage for those videos, like I did with Aerowings and Air Force Delta. I think I might have a good solution finally, so I can get back to it soon.

As for what I’ve been up to in the meantime, I’m very active over on TikTok these days. I share my game pickups, impressions of games, quick reviews of games, general collecting conversations, and also promote TikTok Shop products here and there that I like and recommend. I cross-post some of those videos on my YouTube Shorts and Instagram Reels also.

For actual paying work, I’m still a full-time communications manager at Meta, working on the Quest blog, as well as consulting internally on games and products in development. I also consult with publishers and developers on their games via my solo agency, and I write for Forbes as a part-time contributor focusing on retro games and MMO games. Most recently, I reviewed Neverwinter Nights 2: Enhanced Edition, the latest batch of Evercade Super Pocket consoles, and had some news articles take off like this one for Aion 2.

One of my main goals for the near term is to get back to longer videos on my YouTube channel. I published a video version of my Neverwinter Nights 2: Enhanced Edition review, for example, that’s hit over 1,000 views in a day, which is really exciting for a tiny little channel like mine.

I’m trying to decide what I want to do with this Substack and if I want to continue with it. Perhaps I can just use it to write a bit about what I’m playing, kind of as a companion to the things I make videos about. And updates on my collection. And of course, the Dreamcast Review Project as I’m able.

Grand Theft Auto’s History With Sega

Grand Theft Auto 3 never released for the Sega Dreamcast, but Grand Theft Auto 2 did. Following that release, Rockstar and DMA Design actually began work on GTA 3 with the intent of targeting the Dreamcast as the primary platform. Development started, but after Sega’s confidence in the console started waning and the commercial viability wasn’t as promising, development shifted to the PlayStation 2 instead.

Then, Sega pulled out of the hardware business and the rest is history.

I don’t think GTA 3 on Dreamcast back in the day would have had as big of a cultural impact as it did if it had released on Dreamcast first and I also don’t think the game would have “saved” the platform. It just never happened.

Truth be told, the Dreamcast was dead before it ever released and its short lifespan had very little to do with the power and technical aspects of the console, or the quality of its library. There are lots of reasons the Dreamcast failed, but the console itself and many of its games were excellent and remain fantastic even to this day.

Grand Theft Auto 3 on Dreamcast

Now that that’s out of the way, let’s talk about this fan port. Using the PC version of GTA 3 as a base, the folks behind the DCA3 project managed to bring the entire game over to Dreamcast and it’s honestly remarkable. The game looks great, plays (mostly) smoothly even in its beta form, and feels like it could have and should have released on the platform all those years ago.

In short, it’s like getting to experience a missing piece of gaming history.

You can follow the instrucitons to create your own CDI file using the PC version of the game as a base which will run on an emulator or on an actual disc if you burn it yourself.

Notably, there just aren’t really any games quite like this on the Dreamcast officially. Shenmue is probably the closest comparison you can make, as it pioneered so much of what eventually became standard open world game design, but the action, freedom, and admittedly sheer violence of GTA 3 definitely would have filled a void for Dreamcast owners. And honestly, I think it would have felt very natural.

Dating back to the Genesis, Sega’s platforms were marketed as the “cool” and “edgy” choice for gamers that wanted to break free of childish stereotypes and level up their gaming. GTA 3 served as that tipping point for the industry as a whole and it would have fit in perfectly on the Dreamcast.

But alas, it just never happened.

The version that I have on disc is not the most updated build of the project, so if you go and build your own CDI file and burn it or play it in an emulator, then you may end up with something more stable than what I have. But even still, the version I’ve got is fully playable from start to finish and really doesn’t have many technical issues at all.

The biggest problem I notice with this version I have is that there is very bad pop-in when driving fast and poor draw distance. You can actually toggle the draw distance in the settings, which is a surprising touch for a console game, but that obviously impacts the framerate. I just leave it on the default setting.

Everything else feels and plays great. Admittedly, I do find myself missing the second analog stick for camera control, as is the case with basically every 3D third-person Dreamcast game, but you get used to it quickly.

Overall, I’m blown away. They did an amazing job on this port and it really feels like an official product.

What About That Official Looking Case?

Now in regards to the case I got. I ordered that from this Shopify account, which produces professional-quality game cases and cover art, as well as reproduction discs, and full-color manuals. What draws me to this store is that they don’t just burn bootleg copies of rare games that are hard to come by, but they create official-looking cases and artwork even for games that were never released.

GTA 3 is just one recent example, but you can order a case, disc, and manual for games like Propeller Arena—a canceled flight combat game that was finished but shelved due to the events of 9/11—and many others. It’s really great stuff.

I don’t know if I’ll ever actually play all the way through GTA 3 on Dreamcast, maybe I will later in my review series once allll of the bugs are worked out. But for now, it looks great on my shelf and feels like I filled a void with a missing piece of game history. That’s totally worth it.

I’m collecting, playing, and reviewing every single Sega Dreamcast NA game in order of release and the second game on the list is Airforce Delta (aka Deadly Skies in Europe). You can read more about my process and the project as a whole right here.

The video versions of these reviews, linked above, will go into slightly different details as I commentate over the footage. I’m writing these blog versions first, but not reading from them directly, so consider this more of a companion piece to the video, not a script of what I’m reading.

Airforce Delta for Sega Dreamcast Review

Airforce Delta is a flight combat game. This means it’s not entirely focused on flight simulation like AeroWings was, but instead incorporates combat elements like dog fights and tasks you with battling against other planes in the air. At the time of release, it was often compared directly to Ace Combat 2, which was released two years prior on the original PlayStation.

At the time a game releases, it’s often important, at least for the clarity of consumers, to compare games to their contemporaries. It helps put design decisions into context and fleshes out the genre in a way that will let consumers make informed decisions. But the issue you run into a lot of the time is that by comparing a game heavily to another game, you’re no longer assessing the game on its own merits.

GameSpot’s review of Airforce Delta heavily compares it to Ace Combat 2 and it’s one of the few readily available reviews of the game online from a prominent media outlet since so many websites are gone now and older magazines aren’t accessible. The result? The vast majority of “discourse” about this game online whether it be social media, YouTube, or something else, tends to just write it off as an Ace Combat 2 clone. I don’t think that’s fair.

When a landmark title for a genre releases it’s bound to redefine conventions and expectations, so following suit a couple of years later to give players what they want and love isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

All of this is to say that while I do think Airforce Delta for Dreamcast borrows heavily from the framework Ace Combat 2 essentially created, I don’t think that in and of itself is such a terrible sin that the game isn’t worth taking a look at. Because as a matter of fact, it’s quite fun!

I’ve never been a huge flight game fan, whether that be simulators, combat games, or otherwise, so I guess that means my “casual” nature is showing. The reality of the situation though is that most people who play games are casual players.

What I like about Airforce Delta is that it knows exactly what it is and doesn’t try to be anything that it’s not. What I mean by that is that every mission is basically just a very light amount of narrative window dressing to contextualize why you’re shooting down these other planes and then it sets you loose. After you get through the first few opening missions, the objective variety starts to expand and some of the creativity is really on display.

There aren’t a ton of missions to complete, but I had a really fun time making my way through this one. As you finish missions you’ll collect cash that can be used to buy new planes. The catch here is that if you crash during a mission, then that plane is destroyed and gone from your collection. You can sell planes you no longer use as well, and will likely have to rebuy planes you’ve crashed at some point or another.

It’s a fun risk analysis to ask yourself if you want to risk your deadly, but much pricier machine, to increase your chances of success, or do a trial run with a cheaper plane first before retrying it with a better one.

Thankfully controls are very simple and I never felt like I was at a disadvantage for only having a single analog stick since the game does a nice job of naturally leveling you out often.

After playing AeroWings, it was a relief that I didn’t have a drill sergeant screaming at me every time I messed up and I never had to complete training scenarios proving I knew how to turn in the air or land my jet. Airforce Delta cuts away all that extra fluff that has no place in a combat experience and lets you get right down to the nitty-gritty of blasting away your enemies.

There isn’t a ton of replayability here other than upping the difficulty levels, but it makes up for that structural simplicity by being dead simple to pick up and play. And like I said before, it’s just a blast and nails the adrenaline-pumping intensity only a great dogfight can provide.

Closing Thoughts

Airforce Delta is a game that stuck around for a little while with a handful of entries and spin-offs. A year after its debut on Sega Dreamcast, a Game Boy Color version was released which employed a slow-moving vertical shooter format instead. Considering the technical limitations, it’s actually kind of cool and impressive, but it’s generally a much worse and less fun experience.

There are sequels to Airforce Delta on Xbox and GBA, as well as a final Western entry on PlayStation 2, so the series did have some life for a while.

Overall, I had fun with Airforce Delta. I think my adoration for the Sega Dreamcast, nostalgia for the era, and general leniency to be less critical of an older game I never played could be coloring my judgment here a bit, but I do think they nailed a solid gameplay loop and recognized why Ace Combat was so popular at the time.

The Lion King. Need I say more? Regarded as one of the finest pieces of animation ever put to film with an incredible voice cast, amazing score, fantastic animation, and a heart-wrenching story—the Disney classic is the complete package.

Of course it has a video game adaptation!

The Lion King game, regardless of version, is widely considered to be one of the most frustratingly difficult video games from its era. The difficulty spikes are intentional and the developers have gone on record in more recent years to explain that it was a design decision implemented by Disney to incentivize purchases or multiple rentals over a single weekend playthrough. They wanted you to suffer and buy it since they couldn’t drain your quarters at the arcade with this one.

Does it live up to that reputation? Is it REALLY that hard of a game? Let’s dig in and see.

Physical Game Case

I like to talk about the presentation of a physical retro game up front because, back in the day, that’s how many of us were introduced to these games. There wasn’t YouTube, or the internet in most cases, and in this time period specifically, we didn’t even have TV coverage much at all yet. You’d get a few magazines, maybe, but other than peers telling you about games you were left with browsing game aisles at stores and rental shops. That’s about it.

Naturally, The Lion King has incredible box art. The fire, intensity, and authentic art from the film told you immediately what you were in for. Once you flipped the box around you could see various different levels that seemed to be ripped straight out of the movie as well. This was peak licensed gaming at a time when Disney games were already highly regarded.

Unfortunately, I don’t have the manual with my copy but well done to the folks at Disney, Westwood Studios, and Virgin Interactive.

Nostalgia and Memories

I could never beat this game growing up and I have a feeling that’s probably the case for the vast majority of people that played it back in the day or the ones that have tried to play it in the years since. It’s just a very, very difficult game.

That’s what I remember most. When I’d try to beat it, I’d rarely get up to the point you become adult Simba and would instead run out of lives and continues far before then.

When I finally decided to get good and beat it live on stream earlier this year, a lot of viewers would remark in the latter half of the game they had no idea you could even become adult Simba! That’s how tough the game was for folks.

Beyond that though, the music and pixel art are several steps above most of its contemporaries. The actual character sprites were drawn by animators from Disney itself and the music and voice lines were sampled directly from the film prior to its release. It was one of the first games to ever be developed right alongside the movie it was based on and I think that contributed heavily to its quality and success.

Worth Your Time?

Earlier this year I took the time to actually beat The Lion King on original hardware. You can see the proof right here in this YouTube Shorts clip from my TikTok livestream. Ultimately I agree that it’s a very tough game, but I think a little bit of patience is all it really takes to learn its quirks and figure things out.

Once you understand how to play the game and get a feel for the physics of how things move and where things are in the levels, like any game, it’s really not that hard—just a bit frustrating.

For example, the infamous monkey and ostrich level is the second stage in the game. When you realize the order you need to roar at the monkeys and the timing for the ostrich jumps, it’s one of the easiest levels in the game.

On the other hand, the third to last level, the massive lava level for adult Simba when you’re on your way back to face Scar, now that’s the level that never gets easier. The lava tube explosions, the lava dripping from the cave ceiling, the hidden bats, the hyenas, the tigers—it’s an onslaught of stuff trying to stun-lock you at every step and it’s absolutely brutal.

Usually, my goal is to reach this level without ever wasting a single continue up to that point because I’m gonna burn at least two entire life pools and continues just trying to get through that one.

If you have the patience and thumb dexterity to push through all of that, the delicious center of this game is something full of love, attention to detail, and real heart. It’s a tremendous accomplishment that they were able to craft something that looks, sounds, and plays this great in a tight timeframe for these classic systems.

Compared to something like Mickey Mouse in Castle of Illusion or even Aladdin on Genesis, controls in The Lion King are extremely tight. Simba doesn’t float around when he jumps in this game as he has real weight behind his movements.

And then once you become adult Simba, you lose the ability to roll, but gain the ability to swipe and pounce. He controls heavier, feels more powerful, and in some ways is a tiny bit slower as well. They really nailed how different it might be to embody a lion cub versus an adult lion vying for his kingdom’s throne. Just really great stuff.

Reception at Release

The Lion King was regarded quite highly at release and it, unsurprisingly, sold incredibly well. Over 1.2 million copies sold for the SNES version alone and in total it amassed over 4.5 million copies across all versions. In the 90s, that’s a ludicrous number.

There were ports to MS-DOS, Game Gear, Game Boy, and more, but I know far less about those versions. The Sega Genesis is where my love and nostalgia resides the most.

Reviews lauded the visuals and music, but often critiqued the repetition and difficulty. I’m not sure I understand the repetition complaints since every level is dramatically different and there are two entirely separate versions of Simba to play as. Not to mention it follows the plot of the film about as closely as you could expect. Developer Westwood Studios really, truly, nailed it with this one.

If you want to try it for yourself but don’t have a working old console, have no fear! The Lion King and the Sega Genesis version of Aladdin have been re-released in a bundle for $20 on Switch, PC via Steam, PlayStation 4, and Xbox. You can also grab The Jungle Book and the SNES version of Aladdin as an optional add-on as well for a great quadrilogy of punishing 16-bit platforming goodness.

Final Verdict

Honestly, I consider The Lion King to be one of the best platformers of the entire generation and I’ll go to war on that hill. Visually it’s one of the best-looking games from the entire generation if you ask me, it has a tremendous soundtrack that wiggles its way into your brain and doesn’t leave, and the satisfaction you get from finally conquering it is indescribable.

If you manage to look past the “one of the hardest games ever made” reputation and give it a chance, I really think you might be surprised by how much you love it.

And I’ll do a bit of a humble brag and say that beating it on original hardware, on my actual Sega Genesis, was definitely worth the struggle. Absolutely legendary stuff.

As of the time of this publication, I have 66 Sega Dreamcast games so far out of a total of 248 that were officially released in North America during the console’s lifespan. My goal is to gradually collect, play, and eventually review, all of them. Once a couple more arrive in the mail, I’ll have at least every launch title, which is a great milestone to hit!

If you’re curious about how things are going, here is my spreadsheet. I’ve listed every single Sega Dreamcast game in order of release along with the developer, publisher, and my own status of collecting it whether it be disc only, disc and case, disc and manual, complete, or bootleg. I’ve still got a long way to go!

While I collect this library of games, I’m only counting authentic discs as part of my collection. I do have some bootleg games in there and things like that, but I don’t count those as owning a copy of the game for real. I need to replace those eventually, preferably before I get to them in the review list.

I’m over 25% of the way there, so I feel pretty good about the progress. I’ve already knocked out some of the pricier ones, but there are still many others that will be big hits to my pocket. I hope that they turn up at my favorite local shop so I can take advantage of store credit to grab them.

Latest Sega Dreamcast Games

Since my previous game collection post (you can read that here) I’ve added seven more Dreamcast games. These are a mixture of Facebook Marketplace, eBay auctions and purchases, local stores, and one from a friend that was sent as repayment for a favor.

The seven games I added to boost my collection more are:

The only games out of these that I’d actually played before are San Francisco Rush 2049 and Power Stone, both in the arcade. I had a bootleg copy of Power Stone with a reproduction case, the case is great quality, so I just replaced the disc with an authentic one. And now I need the manual to finish that one off!

I’ve never played Dino Crisis so I’m hyped about that one and Street Fighter Alpha 3 is pretty highly regarded. The others are a pretty diverse mixture. PenPen, Mortal Kombat Gold, and TNN Motorsports are all launch titles so I needed those for the review project soon of course, and Sega Smash Pack Volume 1 I got for free from a friend, it just needs the actual case (he included the manual), and NFL 2K1 I grabbed for a few bucks on eBay.

Other Game Collection Updates

Other than those seven games, I’ve added several accessories as well, such as the Mad Catz MC2 Racing Wheel, which came complete in box! It’s commonly regarded as one of the best wheels for the Dreamcast, so I’ll definitely be using it when reviewing racing games and will do a dedicated video and write up for it and other accessories as well.

I was also able to get the ASCII Mission Stick flight stick at a great price, which is really exciting. I’ll be doing a dedicated review of it and also ranking all of the flight games specifically using the Mission Stick too.

Finally, I also got the new Retro Fighters D6 controller, which is designed specifically for fighting games and 2D games with a form factor very similar to the Sega Saturn controller, as well as a few more VMUs so I don’t have to worry about save space for a while.

I’ll be looking ahead on my list of games to review so I can better prepare with any future accessories I might need in advance, like eventually getting an arcade stick, the fishing controller, the maracas, keyboard, and so on. It’s gonna be a fun journey!

Game Title: Justice League Task Force

I’ve never been the biggest fighting game guy. I’ll partake in some Smash Bros. here and there and have been known to throw down in Mortal Kombat or Soul Calibur from time to time, but when it comes to technical 2D fighters that are all about memorizing moves, countering attacks, and really building up those callouses on your thumbs I’m at a bit of a loss.

Justice League Task Force then, on paper, isn’t button-masher friendly for people like me—but it caught my attention anyway. You can read my full review below, or watch it in the video above. It’s all my own footage and screenshots captured from my actual Sega Genesis (Model 2) via Hyperkin HDMI cable and El Gato HD60X capture card.

Case and Manual

First and foremost, it’s got great cover art. That piece communicates very clearly that all of these iconic characters you know are going to be in this game and they will be playable. Fortunately, it delivers on that promise. Looking at the back cover it’s clear it’s a fighting game for up to two players, rather than a beat ‘em up or action platformer, so generally speaking they did a great job on the case and artwork.

The manual is a different story, unfortunately. The fact it’s black and white isn’t awful considering the comic book roots, and it has some good background detail on the game’s storyline, but it’s not very useful beyond that. Each character has a move list displayed, but it only tells you how to do each move, not what each move actually does. That’s pretty annoying.

Nostalgia and Memories

I distinctly remember renting this game just one time from Blockbuster growing up because I had loved The Death and Return of Superman. As a big fan of other beat ‘em ups such as Streets of Rage and Golden Axe, having a dedicated Superman game in that same genre was amazing to me. I’d later go on to watch and love the Batman, Superman, and Justice League animated shows so that game was very formative for my interests.

Fast forward a while later to me browsing Blockbuster one Friday night and Justice League Task Force immediately caught my eye. A friend was coming over that evening so even though I usually didn’t play fighting games much, this was a perfect scenario and to our little kid minds, it was pretty spectacular.

Worth Your Time?

Justice League Task Force is a game I love to think about and look at, but not really play. Visually I love the large sprites and the detailed backgrounds, but it’s just so cumbersome and clunky to control. It seems like it’s going for an amalgamation of the floaty controls you get in Street Fighter II, but without the combat precision, mixed with big characters and very deliberate moves like in Eternal Champions, but without the oomph and spectacle.

I mean, this is a fighting game featuring characters that can defeat Gods and zip around the planet in a matter of seconds. They should feel powerful and larger than life, but they barely register as competent fighters, let alone the most powerful beings on Earth.

Capturing the feats and power of a superhero in a 16-bit video game back in 1995 isn’t easy, but they could have been a bit more creative here. Each character’s moveset is basically identical with slight variations. For example, The Flash throws tornadoes while Batman throws a batarang. Wonder Woman does a sliding kick and, you guessed it, so does Batman too. Superman can freeze you with his breath, and Green Arrow gets an ice arrow.

You get the idea. Once you’ve played one or two characters, you’ve played them all and the inputs are mostly identical across the board.

That’s not to mention the insane difficult as well. Even on ‘Easy’ it felt like I was playing a CPU hellbent on making sure I didn’t have a good time. It took me several matches to get the hang of things and the CPU is so aggressive you barely have time to breath. They’re very spammy and cheap with their moves as well, which makes it frustrating to try and fight fairly, or at least in a fun way.

That’s not to say that this is a game without merit. As I’ve explained I really do think the power of the IP cannot go overstated and visually it’s quite impressive, especially on the Sega Genesis. The character sprites are large and highly detailed with some great backgrounds as well. Levels like Batman’s Gotham have wonderful moody backdrops and Superman’s stage atop the Daily Planet building is extremely iconic.

I didn’t love the music nearly as much, though. I gravitated towards The Flash as my character of choice, but I frankly hated his song that played during levels. It sounded a bit like someone was dragging their entire face across a synthesizer and my ears were straight up not having a good time, at all.

Reception at Release

Justice League Task Force was not very well received when it originally came out and that reputation has more or less held strong ever since. This is a game that was released on the Sega Genesis and SNES in a world where the Sega Saturn was already out in Japan and North America, the PS1 was out in Japan and soon to be out in North America, and most of the world had moved on from not only this generation but this particular genre on these platforms.

Street Fighter II had already been out and available on home consoles like the SNES and Genesis for multiple years and looking at just the Genesis platform, even Eternal Champions had come and gone already.

Final Verdict

Justice League Task Force mostly resides in the bucket of licensed games that aren’t really notable beyond the IP they represent. Duking it out with the likes of Wonder Woman and Batman is fun in and of itself, especially considering the wonderfully large sprites and detailed pixel art, but beneath the surface is a fighting game that feels like it’s missing something.

Since I’m not a big fighting game aficionado or avid player, it’s hard for me to say that this game is particularly bad, but I’m not sure I’d recommend it unless you’re a big fan of the characters or a collector like myself.

If you’re curious about how things are going, here is my spreadsheet. I’ve listed every single Sega Dreamcast game in order of release along with the developer, publisher, and my own status of collecting it whether it be disc only, disc and case, disc and manual, complete, or bootleg.

Now, the big caveat here for me is that with my Dreamcast collection, I am only counting authentic copies of games that I own in that ‘57’ number. Years ago when I first got my hands on a Sega Dreamcast, I bought several bootleg copies of games and burned discs in replica cases just to fill out my collection a little bit, but I’m not counting those for this project. I’m only counting authentic discs and I’m aiming to have each game complete with case and manual as well. If I included all of the bootleg games then my number is a little over 70 total, but I’m not including those.

It will be a long road, but an exciting one! My local shops do get in some Sega Dreamcast games from time to time and one of them has a very generous trade in policy that I take advantage of to fund some of the pricier items when I can. That’s exactly how I got a great CIB copy of Project Justice for $0 out of pocket, very recently.

Latest Game Collection Additions

As you can see from the image up top, I just added Toy Commander and Fighting Force 2 to my Dreamcast collection. In fact, I grabbed both of those from that same retro shop nearby that I mentioned with the great trade in policy.

I’ve never played either of these games, as a matter of fact, so it’s exciting to have them added into my growing collection. I probably won’t get around to actually playing either of them much any time soon, but I did test them out to make sure they work.

Since I’m doing my Sega Dreamcast review project, it’ll be a while before I get around to properly playing those games, but I wanted to add them into the collection regardless. I’ll need to get some new shelving for my office soon so I have a dedicated spot for all my Dreamcast games for sure!

And on a related note, I’ll probably aim to get my hands on a Dreamcast Mission Stick so I can re-test the flight games with it, as well as one of those twin stick controllers for some of the other games. The fishing rod too! And a racing wheel! So much stuff!

With Avowed now available on Xbox and PC, as well as Game Pass, I thought it would be a good time to republish this review of a game from the same developer nearly a decade ago!

Review: Tyranny Is A Complex Story Of A World Where Evil Wins

After finishing a great work of fiction, it’s not uncommon for me to experience a moment of silence and reflection. After I turn the final page or watch the credits roll, I prefer to take time to reflect on the journey I’ve just experienced, what I learned, and what it meant. In the case of Tyranny, the latest roleplaying game from the venerable developers at Obsidian, that moment of reflection lasted a bit longer than usual.

Unlike the vast majority of fantasy RPGs, including Obsidian’s previous game, Pillars of Eternity, Tyranny does not employ a traditional high-fantasy setting. There are no fantastical beasts like dragons, goblins, or orcs to contend with, you are not the chosen one that must rise to the occasion and vanquish evil, and it’s not a 40+ hour sprawling epic adventure. In this case, you’re cast into a world where not only did evil win, but it flourishes with you as its right hand.

The Overlord Prevails

From the opening scenes, it's abundantly clear the concept of "evil winning" shines through in every aspect. In the world of Tyranny, you play as the Fatebinder, a powerful and high-ranking officer in the employment of Kyros, the great overlord. During the opening prologue, referred to as Conquest, you'll make a series of choices that build your reputation and set the foundation for your character as you lead the armies in their subjugation of the Tiers, the southern regions. This is at the core of what makes Tyranny so special.

Under Kyros' rule are two rival military factions that, despite their hatred for one another, must find a way to work together. The Disfavored are a tight-knit group of trained and disciplined, albeit merciless and brutal, soldiers, whereas the Scarlet Chorus is a scattered, rabid, and often chaotic collection of gangs and former prisoners turned murderers. One has order, one has numbers.

You're in charge of negotiating disputes and ensuring they're successful in their mission.

The actual game begins when a group of rebels rise up to challenge the overlord and Graven Ashe, the leader of the Disfavored, and The Voices of Nerat, the leader of the Scarlet Chorus, cannot agree on how to handle the situation. The overlord specifically sends you to issue an Edict -- a magical proclamation that brings devastation to a region until a specific requirement is met -- to spur them to action. In this Edict’s case, the siege must be resolved or everyone in the entire region will die, including you and your allies. Through your decisions, you'll eventually side with either the Disfavored or the Scarlet Chorus.

These are the moments that both make and break the experience of Tyranny. On more than one occasion I had to step away from my desk simply to deliberate pivotal moments in the game because of the gravity of the situations. Without ruining anything, one specific scenario may result in many players murdering a baby in its crib simply to fulfill the decree of the overlord.

But that isn't to say the game is full of false dichotomies and varying degrees of disdain. It's not a matter of "Burn down this house full of babies" or "Obliterate this temple full of puppies" in all cases, but the majority of the game fits very cleanly into the decidedly gray area of moral dilemmas. It's very difficult to be a "good guy" and for someone who typically plays as a paladi like myself, that was hard to stomach at times.

There is no karma scale and you won't become more or less evil based on what you do, it's just a world full of people and decisions that all form their own opinions about you based on your actions. In a lot of cases, you may not even know the breadth of the consequences of every decision you make, which furthers its emulation of a more realistic and less tangible system of morality.

It’s Good to Be Bad

At character creation, you're presented with a handful of skill specializations to pick from, but no classes, against a backdrop of a smoldering, deserted wasteland. Want to play as a traditional Warrior? Pick one-handed weapons and shields. Or maybe you'd rather use bows from a distance. You could even specialize in one-handed weapons and a certain type of magic as well.

Similar to The Elder Scrolls games before Skyrim, you'll increase your level in each skill by performing it more often. Killing enemies with a two-handed hammer will increase your two-handed skill, opening locked chests will increase your Subterfuge skill, and so on. All of that feeds into an overall level as well, giving you a single attribute and single skill point to invest in your progression. But unlike Skyrim, this is a decidedly old-school roleplaying game in the vein of Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights -- it's not gonna be for everyone.

Your main character has a litany of skill trees to pick from, but it's only worth investing heavily in two, and maybe a third as an accent, to get the most out of them. And just like any game made by the folks at Obsidian or Bioware, you'll have a colorful cast of followers to recruit on your journey.

Since there are no classes, each companion takes on a personality, and skillset, that's all their own. From Barik, the ironclad Disfavored warrior who is literally fused to the armor that he wears due to a horrific side effect of an accident, or Verse, the foul-mouthed rogue who leaves the Scarlet Chorus to join your ranks. Many of the followers in the game, such as Eb, a former rebel, or Kills-in-Shadows, a beastwoman, could even be killed when you first meet them if you're hostile enough.

Every character in the game has an intriguing story of personal sacrifice and triumph to tell; stories that are, in most cases, more interesting than the game's core narrative itself. Which makes it all the more disappointing that none of them are ever resolved. You don't get to find out how to rescue Barik from his armor -- rendering him unable to ever change his armor throughout the entire game, a frustrating concession since none of the other characters should specialize in heavy armor given their skill sets. I wanted more than anything to advance their personal storylines, complete loyalty missions, or see them evolve in someway. Instead, they either grow to respect or fear you over the course of the game, but never really change in a meaningful way.

Even though your companions suffer from a lack of narrative depth in some cases, building relationships is still more than worthwhile. Tyranny employs a unique reputation system for different factions and your individual followers. Based on what you do and say, companions will grow to fear you or become more loyal. Factions will grow more loyal, or will increase their wrath towards you. In some cases, a follower could fear you and feel loyalty, or a faction could hate or fear you, but feel loyalty at the same time. Reaching the ends of both spectrums is tricky and rare, but entirely possible.

When you hit a milestone in a relationship, you unlock a reputation ability. For example, if the Disfavored feel loyalty towards me, it demonstrates my respect among the army and gives me the ability to inspire and buff my allies. Some of these powers are passive bonuses, while others are active abilities. For followers, you unlock combo abilities that can be triggered between two characters. My favorite was with Verse, where I could punch the ground so hard it sent her into the air where she blasted a series of well-aimed and powerful arrows into a defined enemy.

Brutality and Conquest

Combat itself is a bit different than what fans of Pillars of Eternity might be expecting. It's similar in that you can stop and pause combat to issue orders, click where you want allies to go and who to attack, and manage your inventory and skills from menus. But now, party sizes are decreased to 4 this time around and every ability you have possesses an individual cooldown time. In addition, each character must wait between actions. This results in a lot more downtime during battle and heavy use of idle animations, which are a bit jarring. In the latter half of the game, this is mostly solved through the added complexities and strategies in combat, or by speeding up the game.

At first, I didn't enjoy the combat as much, but as it expanded with more reputation abilities, more followers, and even artifact powers from special legendary items, things started to click for me. So once the repetitive nature of encounters reared its ugly head (there are maybe a total of 10 or so different types of enemies and most of them fight the same) I was a bit disappointed. For such a rich, detailed, and unique setting, it honestly feels like some aspects of the game are unfinished or were rushed in development.

Some quests are missing necessary steps and details (developers have posted on forums since launch to explain the order of events that weren't communicated well), as mentioned, none of the followers resolve their storylines, some of the most exciting parts of the game happened in the truncated final act, and some portions of the game are just never fully realized.

The cliffhanger ending that happens almost entirely with written text on illustrated backgrounds feels more like a setup for expanded DLC and an eventual sequel than it does an actually cogent conclusion to the story. The narrative thread of the game is only partially resolved as you're left on the eve of an even larger conflict as the credits roll.

The musical scorer in Tyranny is nothing short of spectacular. Organizing the tracks for something so oppressive and ominous must have been difficult, but you wouldn’t know it. From the moment that the Obsidian and Paradox logos flash in the opening loading screens, to the main title menu, the rumbling bass and soaring tunes make it clear that this is an adventure of epic proportions. While the entire game isn’t voiced—be ready to read thousands of lines of dialogue with your own eyeballs—the voice acting that is there is some of the best I’ve heard in this style of RPG. Between the score and voice acting, the sounds of Tyranny are nearly flawless.

Becoming a Fatebinder

Tyranny struggles to fit all of its ambitious designs into its tightly woven story, leaving open loose ends and underutilized mechanics. While it could have been even better, as the first two-thirds of the game are some of the best roleplaying I've ever seen, its conclusion feels like a shadow of what it was originally conceived as.

That being said, don't think it takes away from the core of what makes Tyranny such a powerful and compelling story. I was glued to my monitor for the full 25-30 hour adventure and while I was left desperately wanting more at the end, I'm both satisfied with the journey and the ending that my Fatebinder reached.

Fans of classic PC RPGs such as Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights, or the recent Pillars of Eternity, owe it to themselves to join the ranks of Kyros' forces and embark on a riveting conquest as one of the legendary and powerful Fatebinders. Gather your party and venture forth!

Overall Score: 8.75

With a rushed third act and a few frustrating quirks here and there, Tyranny falls just short of reaching the legendary heights of the game’s that inspired it. Obsidian has however once again delivered on their pedigree with an engrossing and inventive story of betrayal and tyrannical rule. A must-play for fans of isometric narrative roleplaying games.

Obsidian struggles to wrap up all loose ends before the credits roll, but that doesn’t take away from the wonderfully brutal and troubling story of a world where evil was victorious.

With a slightly more stylized look than its spiritual predecessor, Pillars of Eternity, Tyranny’s visual style is intriguing and eye-popping. The bright and bold colors of traditional fantasy are replaced with dark and brooding tones.

Gameplay: 8

The new cooldown-based combat and smaller party size infuse more downtime than necessary and ejects much of the tactical complexity, but it retains the soul of what makes these sorts of RPGs so addicting and satisfying.

Sound: 10

As a veritable masterpiece of modern gaming, the soundtrack in Tyranny is fantastic. Soaring tracks mixed with deep, bass-laced thundering tones to deliver a score that never stops trumpeting your conquests.

Welcome to my first entry in my Sega Dreamcast review project! Watch the first review above ^^^

I’m collecting, playing, and reviewing every single Sega Dreamcast game in order of release and the first game on the list is AeroWings. You can read more about my process and the project as a whole right here.

The video versions of these reviews, linked above and here, will go into slightly different details as I commentate over the footage. I’m writing these blog versions first, but not reading from them directly, so consider this more of a companion piece to the video, not a script of what I’m reading.

AeroWings is a flight simulation game. What that means, for those unaware, is that the focus is on simulating the act of flying a plane realistically, not on aerial combat or dogfighting. As a result, there’s actually zero combat in this game at all.

The opening video sequences are a montage of footage of real pilots actually flying planes in formation and soaring across the skies. It does a nice job of setting the tone and expectation of what you’re in for. But if you’re like me, someone who only plays flight games casually and usually prefers something more action-packed, it was definitely an adjustment.

My only past experience with flight simulation was dabbling in various entries in the Microsoft Flight Simulator series on PC growing up. I had a friend in high school who was very into that sort of thing so I used to try them out (unsuccessfully) on his dad’s computer from time to time. It never went well.

Perhaps somewhat expectedly, AeroWings didn’t really go well for me at first either. The game is split into a handful of modes and it’s not really clear from the menu what any of them contain or which order they should be played in. And what it doesn’t tell you, is that you absolutely should watch the hands-off demonstration explainer video before you do anything else. Like, it should be mandatory even though it isn’t. You can access it either via the “Training” option at the main logo menu, or in the “Library” section under “Briefing Video” — it’s literally required viewing to get any sort of enjoyment here.

This video demonstration is crucial to your understanding and enjoyment of if you, like me, have never sat in a cockpit in real life and have no idea what any of the onscreen information means. There is a base level of flight knowledge the game expects you to have and even if you read the game’s manual (which I did) there’s a lot of stuff that will just fly right over your head (pun intended).

After watching that video, which is basically a pre-tutorial, you’re ready for the Blue Impulse missions, which are then actual hands-on tutorials. Except, imagine that the tutorial is less about teaching you and more about quizzing you on topics you’ve never learned. Like if you walked into a classroom for a final exam without ever attending a single class.

Each of these Blue Impulse missions is preceded by a lengthy, but highly necessary, briefing sequence that tells you precisely what to do, but doesn’t actually explain how to do anything, which is problematic since precision is key here.

These briefings contain details like the exact throttle power, speed, altitude, turn angles, and so on that you need to hit exactly to pass to the next tutorial. It’s extremely unforgiving and difficult to appease. I did get a few good chuckles when the instructor would scream at me and berate me for not doing well enough, though. The juxtaposition between the upbeat and cheery main menu music and the dictator-esque instructor is a wonderful dichotomy worth studying.

Once I was tired of this treatment, I moved on to the next set of missions which are confusingly titled “Sky Mission Attack” for some reason. Remember how I said there is no combat in this game? Well, these “Attack” missions are just ring flight courses. They stick you on one of the various maps, place rings in the air, and task you with flying through enough to get a high enough score to move on.

Honestly, I did enjoy these missions though. Thanks to the very meticulous and intricate controls, there is a certain level of satisfaction when you pull off a tight turn and clip through the ring at the last millisecond with the edge of your wing before spinning back to the next one. It feels exhilarating, thanks in no small part to how beautiful and smooth Dreamcast games still look even today, and I caught myself holding my breath a few times in anticipation.

There’s a multi-play mode I wasn’t able to test out partially due to having no one to try it with, but also due to the insanely high barrier to entry. I could havev asked my wife or 7yo son to give it a try with me, but the multi-play mode is all about flying in formation perfectly with each other.

Yeah, no thanks.

Other than free flight around the maps, that’s all there is to offer in this one. You can unlock new planes and complete missions, but I didn’t notice much difference in how they handled. This is the part where a snobby flight sim enthusiast tells me how uncultured I am if they haven’t already started writing a paragraph in their mind.

Closing Thoughts

Did I eventually get really good and master everything? Absolutely not. Was I eventually able to pass all of the missions, just barely? Also no. But did I get through a handful of them finally before giving up and moving on to other modes? Reluctantly, yes.

I’m not sure if I would ever describe a single moment of my time with AeroWings as “fun,” but I don’t think I regret playing it either. As a time capsule of what one of the very first flight simulators for consoles looks like, AeroWings is actually quite impressive and fascinating.

Visually they’ve done a great job considering the size of the maps and intricacy of its design. I’m not surprised that AeroWings didn’t make more of a splash, but it clearly did well enough to spawn a sequel that added combat and if you pay attention, you’ll notice the game is included in lots of Dreamcast game lots and bundles for sale in stores, yard sales, and online.

As one of the launch titles for Sega’s final game console, people bought it. They may not have loved it, but they did buy it.

The Mission

I’ve decided that 2025 is the year I formally begin my mission to collect, play, and review every single officially licensed NA Sega Dreamcast game ever released. According to my research, that’s 248 games. I won’t be done by the start of 2026, that’s for sure!

Game 1/248: AeroWings

To complete this entire journey, by the end I want to:

• Own a physical, complete-in-box copy of each game. That means a playable authentic disc, the case with artwork intact, and manual.

• Play every single game. I probably will not “beat” or “complete” all of them. I won’t force myself to finish something that isn’t for me, but I will give each game a bare minimum of at least an hour or two of my time.

• Review every single game. This means a written review here on my Substack, as well as a video review on my YouTube. These reviews will take into consideration the game’s development environment, its developer’s and publisher’s legacy, the reception at the time of release, and of course how it holds up today and what the current market value looks like. I want these reviews to be informative and opinionated, not just boring rehashes of the same platitudes you can get anywhere.

As for deciding on which games to review, I plan to stick to a mostly chronological timeline in order of release. I considered just picking at random, but that seems silly, and alphabetical doesn’t make a lot of sense practically because I won’t be experiencing the console’s evolution. It would also get tedious playing sequels all in a row repeatedly. The order of release seems like the best approach to me.

If more than one game is released on a specific day, such as the launch day of 9/9/99, then I’ll default to alphabetical in those cases.

Finally, in the case that I have trouble getting a game at a reasonable price (some Sega Dreamcast games are HUNDREDS of dollars for complete copies) then I may skip them and come back later on when I can get my hands on a copy. Hopefully, it takes a while before that happens. I’ve already got most of the launch lineup which should tie me over for a while.

I don’t have issues with emulation, but for the purposes of this project, which is all about experiencing the games as they were intended, I don’t want to use it at all. I won’t be using a CRT TV due to space limitations, but I have a high-quality Pound HDMI cable and El Gato capture card that results in nice footage that looks great without “upscaling” or stretching.

Why The Sega Dreamcast?

I grew up as a Genesis Kid. The Sega Genesis was the first home console I ever had that I felt like I could call “my own” growing up and I was very attached to it and its library. In fact, I’d say I still am. I absolutely love Sonic the Hedgehog and I’ve passed that fandom on to my now 7yo son and I grew up loving the unique, quirky way of doing things that defined Sega’s marketing and approach to game development.

Some of my favorite game franchises of all-time left huge impressions on me because of their releases on the Sega Genesis such as Sonic, Golden Axe, Streets of Rage, Phantasy Star, and a slew of licensed games like The Lion King, Aladdin, Mickey Mouse, X-Men, and many more.

However, I didn’t stick with Sega. My next system was the Nintendo 64, followed by the Nintendo GameCube and eventually a PlayStation 2. I’ve been mostly a PlayStation guy with a side of Nintendo and PC ever since. Growing up, I wasn’t from a family that could afford to buy all the latest games every year or get the newest systems all the time. That led to lots of choices and sacrifices as a result. I don’t regret skipping the Sega Saturn and Sega Dreamcast because I loved the N64, NGC, and PS2. Plus, I get to experience the Saturn and Dreamcast now as an adult which has been pretty amazing.

That’s not to say I haven’t played any Dreamcast games. I had friends and family that owned the console, so I was exposed to the platform. And I got my own Dreamcast around five years ago that I’ve been enjoying and slowly collecting for. I have around 60 games right now for the system (and nearly 700 games total in my collection!) so I’m definitely not a stranger.

I also appreciate that Sega Dreamcast games are in small, square disc cases (just like PS1) which take up far less room. And less than 250 releases in North America is a number I can actually visualize physically. That’s ideal as a homeowner with limited storage space!

When Does It Start?

The project starts this week to kick off the New Year! The first game is, of course, AeroWings.

I’ve already compiled a table with every NA Sega Dreamcast game sorted by order of release date, as well as the current status of it in my collection. I’m using PriceCharting as well to track my entire collection beyond just Dreamcast.

Why am I making a Substack?

Well, as you may or may not know, I was a game journalist for around 10 years. I wrote for places like IGN, Forbes, UploadVR, Android Central, PC Gamer, Polygon, Gamecrate, Game Skinny, VideoGamer, Rock Paper Shotgun, GameSpot, and tons of other places over the years. I attended E3 several times, interviewed industry legends, reviewed the biggest AAA games on the market, brought attention to underrepresented indie gems and nascent technologies like VR, and so much more. I hosted lots of podcasts and talk shows, did live talk shows like Kinda Funny, and tons of livestreams.

I left journalism in 2021 and worked at Meta in Editorial Comms for nearly two years, before eventually getting laid off, then I worked as a PR and Comms manager at a VR game studio called First Contact Entertainment. After that, I formally opened my own game consulting agency, Jagger Byte Media, and went back to Meta on a contract to rejoin the Editorial Comms team.

That being said, I really do miss just analyzing games and diving deeper into my thoughts on them, so that’s what this is for.

What Sort of Content?

I obviously won’t be writing formal game reviews for publications like IGN anymore. I livestream every now and then on TikTok and Twitch and I have a YouTube channel that I never really use, but I miss just writing. The plan is to dive into written analysis of games I’m playing, trends in the industry, and maybe even documenting my journey on the inside of the industry itself—as much as I’m able to, at least.

I won’t be writing scored game reviews, but I will be delving into my thoughts on games I’m playing. I won’t be selling my writing to websites and magazines, but you can still expect that same level of quality.

A lot of my writing is no longer accessible as well, such as websites that have died or magazines that are no longer in circulation. I may use this platform to republish that writing from past years as well if something feels topical.

Maybe I’ll interview people. Maybe I’ll start up a podcast (again). Maybe I’ll treat it like a personal blog. I don’t know!

Why the Name Jagger Byte?

After I was unemployed for the second time in the span of about 13 months from Nov. 2022 - Dec. 2023, I decided I should set up a bit of a safety net that I could continue building in the background while I found full-time work again. So that’s what I did.

Jagger Byte Media is the brand I created for my consulting projects. Under that banner, I’ve done PR and marketing consulting and outreach for games like Hangry and Gundam VR, I’ve ran event and booth support at events like GDC, researched and written market studies for independent developers, and wrote many mock reviews for publishers.

I decided I liked the name a lot and wanted to use it in other ways, so here we are! This blog will just be called ‘Jagger Byte’ instead of ‘Jagger Byte Media’ to help differentiate a bit. Make sense?
